Onomea Tea Wins Big at 1st Tea Competition of US Tea Growers!

November 8, 2015 in Uncategorized by Mike

The first tea competition for US Tea Growers was held in Volcano, HI, on November 7. Ten US states were represented in the competition and 79 teas were submitted. Onomea Tea won 6 awards, 1st and 3rd place in the Green Tea Category, 2nd and 3rd place in the Oolong Category and 2nd and 3rd place in the Black Tea Category. Teas submitted were judged by world renowned tea professionals, Selena Akmed, Kevin Gascoyne, Jane Pettigrew, and Bruce Richardson. Judges also gave informative presentations about the tea industry. Teas were judged blindly and on their own merits with no knowledge of who or where the teas were grown or processed. All twelve awards for commercial growers went to the growers on big island of Hawaii. The TOTUS competition (TOTUS1AWARDS.com) was a remarkable and professionally executed event. We appreciate Onomea Tea being recognized and thank Eva Lee, the judges, the Volcano Art Center and all those responsible for the first tea competition for USA grown teas.
Below are some other pictures we took during the event. Bai-Alla is our part-time Farm Manager and he grows tea up in Volcano as well.  His White Tea won 1st and 3rd prize. We hope to be selling his wonderful White Tea on this site soon:
